Portraiture midterm

before and after pics of my portrait--will update with a better final picture.
I struggled a lot with this--it was mentally and emotionally taxing -_- I kept on erasing the face because the colors wouldn't be right or the nose was too far to the left or something like that....
I was far too focused on one area and stressed out about it ~I forgot there were other components that needed to be painted. I turned to my friends for their advice which was really useful--and I appreciate it a lot.

the crit was to be mindful of my edges, some of them are too harsh like the line dividing her bangs from her forehead. Light the outer right edge of the hair. Fix the highlight on the left side of her head. Crop wasn't convincing enough, zoom out a little more so that the bunny ears are fully visible and the figure smaller.
I was thinking of painting a couple more flowers. Her shirt really bothers me-- there should be more highlights there and perhaps redoing the shadow on her cheeks, underneath her eyes.

oil isn't my strongest suit but I really tried my best on this--I'm never sure whether the painting's good or bad especially after staring at it for more than 10 hours.

EDIT-- so here' s a better picture of my portrait--;_; i didn't fix anything haha mainly so the model can see it ~ not sure if you'll enjoy my portrayal of you- the idea was to make it look more 'cartoony' than realistic

CP: Honeybadger Cafe

;_; I love this place

I wish I lived closer to this cafe
-_- there aren't really that many study places where I live
anyhoo--the perspective is kind of wonky towards the ends of the pictures...
but I love doing these--been a while since I worked with copic markers -- kind of rusty ~_~
but I'd like to do more of these in the future!

I highly recommend going here :) my favorite drink has to be the almond milk tea and the Italian Mango Soda

short rant:
I JUST WANT TO PLAY! ;_; four more weeks until freedom!!!
even though I know I'll get  bored after three days
things to do on my list, beat alice madness returns, read the hunger games and other suggested books, cover some songs, improve my sketching for entertainment stuff, get out of my house, and most of all COSPLAY!!! :D in my own house I guess haha

just random and completely irrelevant, I want to comment on my friends' work
but every time I post, it doesn't show up on their post :(

ID: book cover for Breakfast at Tiffany's WIP

Just a screen shot of the book jacket assignment I'm working on--
The most important thing missing is the title--have to work on that by hand but I think I kind of like how it's turning out :)

~_~ ahh the color palette is kind of bland...i had this really golden yellow but during the crit, they associated it with Spain or Mexico and said to go for a more urban feel

Honestly, this project kind of bored me when we were first assigned it--but then I started getting into it :D -- I had a whole bunch of other ideas for this book but they were too uhm...extreme haha I portrayed Holly to be some kind of 'gold digger' XD (part of her is) I wish I didn't watch the movie -_- visually, movies ruin everything if you don't read the book before it.

I can't wait to print it out!

disclaimer: I do not claim ownership over Breakfast at Tiffany's or Vintage International-- I did not write the summary of the book or bio of Truman Capote, I just copied it off of the version I have at the moment. This is merely a class project.

Shiina Ringo Gig Poster

Illustration Design HW-- create a gig poster
*_* hrmrmrm the font isn't as well integrated into the poster--as it could be -A- too much of a disconnect between the image and the text
the crit was to take out the glow effect on the screens(which I actually kind of liked)
and hand write the text at the bottom
man this project was a mess ;_;

this is not an actual event--just a project for a class haha

old digital illustration stuff

part of my final--wasn't quite happy with the finished product
but I want to continue working on it maybe for portfolio or to sell

big update

these are two of the ideas I had for the book cover of memoirs of a geisha but they didn't follow the rules that my instructor put down
anyhow, i had fun drawing these two :)

this is just a study done in drawing for illustration-hi tech Pilot pens are the best for this type of line work (because they skip)
another illustration for the drawing for illustration class
i worked on this for a long time and was beginning to hate it
-_- ahh i dunno maybe its the terrible job i did on the fence that bothers me and the obvious mess up i made in the left corner- i black massed this small gate thing hoping to make it a nice silhouette but it was awful so i put gesso over is -_- ahh worst mistake ever...
i cropped it down to maybe 70% of the actual picture
i liked this idea but ugh i need to work on my execution...
haha my instructor actually liked this one
and my mom didn't like it much so i thought i would get a bad crit out of this @_@ i was completely wrong...

anyhow, this was inspired by a creepy moment during the time i was taking a short nap

so i was knocked out and was napping during the daytime-i was planning to sleep for maybe just 30 minutes--so i enter rem sleep where your body is completely relaxed and kind of...paralyzed? So i'm not sure that i woke up during this time or if it was a dream but i couldn't move my body. on the very top of my head, someone was making a circle with finger repeatedly. It was almost as if my head was shaved completely and i could hear the sound of the fingernail dragging on top of my head except it was amplified and was the only thing i could hear. at that moment i wasn't scared at all...in fact whenever i have nightmares, i'm sometimes very calm when something terrible is happening. it's only when i wake up that it creeps the hell out of me.

lady of the swamp finished!

warning, large file! :D and please do not steal!
made by yours truly and finished at 6 this morning
kind of proud of it :) the only critique in class was to draw small waves in the water and eliminate those little circle brushes
other than that, i'm pretty satisfied with it....it makes me feel a little more confident about my art

anime la 2011 and aritsts' alley tips

not sure that people will actually follow the link to this blog on my card
but if you're looking for my deviantart (where most of my anime stuff is on), it's http://www.ichigonogenki.deviantart.com
thank you for visiting (and not losing my card)
-------

and here's my Anime LA 2011 con report with a list of artists' alley tips copied from my DA journal!

i am both happy and sad that it's over XD
today i was just really knocked out-it was hard to be enthusiastic with just two and a half hours of sleep haha i stayed up doing a commission to make three chibis...i just couldn't get to the third one, luckily the customer liked the two that i did do so yay!

as for sales--or at least my definition of good sales, was better than ax
=-= ax was an atrocity

i didn't even put up a sign for commissions - but i still got a few despite that :D
part of the reason why i didn't do commissions was because 1)i was lazy 2)i think it's important to interact with your customers 3)i was too lazy to bring my supplies and i hardly had any room to do them on

i love the people that attend this con because they seem to have a better appreciation of art as opposed to some of the people who attend more of those commercial conventions like Anime Expo and it seems like the parents who attend actually have some sort of interest in what their kids like which is good ^^

it's nice to receive compliments about my art (even if they don't buy anything) just simply being acknowledged in a good way makes me happy

so i think i should do lists of dos and don'ts i learned at this con
1)if you're using foamcore as your display and it will being lying flat on your table, USE BLACK- when dust or lint or hair falls on white foamcore, it's obvious and makes it looks dirty

2)i now figured out the power of sunday specials! :3 have good deals- instead of having sales on sets of characters from the same series, just do deals like buy 3 get the 4th free so that the choices aren't so limited

3)PEOPLE LIKE STICKERS- they enjoy sifting through them- i should have made more from animes/games that people know more about

4)TAILOR YOUR DISPLAY AROUND YOU- don't block your face! people need to know that you're there

5)PEOPLE ENJOY FREE STUFF- seriously who doesn't? and :iconpompi: told be about THE FREE BIN >< which i shall try at my next con which is yet to be decided- anyhoo the free item i would give out was the cheapest thing on my table, stickers which were 25 cents each-so for the first two days my deal was free stickers with purchase of $5 or more and today it was a free sticker with ANY purchase

6)make lists with the prices of the things on your display- i think people kind of struggled to find it at my booth because i put my prices on post it notes and kind of scattered them throughout my display- but at least that got me talking to my customers when they wanted to know the prices-and when you have a sunday special, make your sign big!

7)when people are asking for whatever it is on your table, write it down as they say it so you're not blanking while trying to rack your inventory for their purchase and then asking them again and again about which ones they want-on top of that you might forget to write it down afterwards

8)CONTACT INFO IS CRUCIAL - especially for commissions- just assume that you'll never meet that person again (even if they're attending all the days that the con is on) so just get any snippet of contact info you can- a number, an e-mail- whichever one they use most.

9)business cards are there for the taking- don't be stingy with them >_> if you don't want to give them out because they are easy to lose (i admit my business cards from moo.com might be easy to lose but it's different from the rest because of the size) then try doing post cards- those are harder to lose - try to make it different from the rest so that people remember to look you up :D - you could make it functional like the back is a calendar or something...

10) LABEL YOUR CHARACTERS if you can- plenty of people have brain farts and feel like they can't buy the character just because they don't know who they are so it's good to help them out and label your characters

11)COUNT YOUR CUSTOMER'S CHANGE IN FRONT OF THEM- personally, i never pay attention to change at cons when i'm the one buying- this is more for the artist, not the customer- if you're going to screw over the customer like that, in the end it's just going to ruin YOU- and when you do count their change in front of them, you give them the benefit of the doubt...it's just good to be honest and trustworthy

12)don't pressure people to buy from you- i hate it when people do it to me but it's good to let them know about your deals

13)encourage people to look around the room (usually just at small cons with small artists' alley) i know that this might hurt some people's sales- but a lot of people at ALA try to be smart with their money haha and wait it out till the last day >_> i'd do just the same- you're not the only one in the world who's talented, seriously give other people a chance-advertise your friends don't be a butt D:<

14) don't want to spend your money at AA? do an art trade! >_> i really just found out about trading at cons...-_-...people can be very generous with their art--so don't take your position at artists' alley for granted-on top of that, it's good to be friends with other artists- or at least stop by their booth and collect their cards

--

for now i think that's it...i'll probably edit in some more
i'm no pro at artists' alley (this is only my third time ) but this is really just for me to keep track of what i learned--and may be of help for other budding artists
